ZTA Hosts Centennial Convention in Richmond

Katy Wentz Williams of Cary, Adrianne Wilson of Chapel Hill, and Ashley Clark of Cary, represented their respective alumnae and collegiate chapters of Zeta Tau Alpha Fraternity for women at the organization’s 1998 Centennial Convention in Richmond, VA, June 25-30, 1998. Ashley is the president of the Zeta Tau Alpha chapter at UNC Chapel Hill and Adrianne is the president of the chapter at NC State University. Katy is a member of the Research Triangle Alumnae chapter of ZTA. These women joined 1,200 ZTA collegiate and alumnae members and national officers from across the United States for ZTA’s Century of Sisterhood, as denoted by the theme.

Zeta Tau Alpha was founded in 1898 at Longwood College in Farmville, VA and has more than 155,000 members worldwide. The organization is one of the largest national sororities. Through visionary programming on current women’s issues, ZTA strives to develop leadership, educational and professional potential of the Fraternity’s membership.

“We couldn’t be more thrilled to return to Virginia, the home of Zeta Tau Alpha, to celebrate our Centennial,” says ZTA National President Nan Barkley Boettcher. On Saturday, delegates toured historical sites related to the sorority, including Longwood College and founding member’s hometowns of Charlotte Court House and New Store. Longwood College President Dr. Patricia Picard Cormier spoke to the assembly. The ZTA Foundation presented Longwood with a scholarship donation of $9,000 in honor of the nine Founders of Zeta Tau Alpha.

The biennial International Convention is the Fraternity’s legislative body, consisting of delegates from 140 collegiate chapters and 250 alumnae organizations. The five-day Convention focused on the history and accomplishments of the organization and its members. The 1998 Outstanding Alumna Award was presented to ZTA Lynda Johnson Robb, Chairman of Reading is Fundamental and wife of Senator Charles Robb. The assembly culminated in the presentation of biennial awards.

Local resident, Adrianne Wilson from ZTA’s Iota Phi chapter at NC State University took home the highest award for chapter involvement in campus activities for a school with a medium-sized greek organization. Theta Tau chapter of ZTA at UNC Chapel Hill, represented by Ashley Clark, was awarded the Sherry Server Tilley Leadership Award for excellence in leadership development programs. Katy Williams accepted the Alumnae Crown Chapter Award for her chapter, Research Triangle Alumnae. The Alumnae Crown Chapter award recognizes alumnae chapters that have excelled in a number of areas including community service, fundraising, programming, and collegiate chapter support. The Research Triangle Alumnae chapter sells Dine-A-Mate books in the fall in order to raise money for a special college scholarship that is awarded to a deserving woman from the triangle area each year.

Both chapters at NC State and UNC Chapel Hill were awarded the Collegiate Crown Chapter Award for excellence in scholarship, community service, fundraising, membership, and alumnae-collegiate relations and the Founders Club award which recognizes those chapters which have raised more than $5000 for the ZTA Foundation for each of the last two years. The ZTA Foundation funds various philanthropic endeavors including support of the Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation and the Race for the Cure, as well as offering scholarships to young women across the country. The ZTA chapter at NC State University raises money by holding an annual golf tournament in the fall. UNC Chapel Hill’s chapter sponsors the Franklin 5K race each February to raise money for the Komen Foundation and the Association for Retarded Citizens.

Zeta Tau Alpha is the national co-sponsor of the Breast Cancer Survivors Recognition program for the Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation Race for the Cure. ZTAs from NC State, UNC Chapel Hill and East Carolina University joined area ZTA alumnae and participated in the 1998 NC Triangle Race for the Cure by distributing caps, buttons and t-shirts to survivors attending the event. Zeta members also presented survivors with a pink rose and balloon as they crossed the finish line.
