A Century of Sisterhood
Thursday everyone arrived at the Richmond Marriott to register for the convention. It was a little chaotic for some since the Marriott couldn't hold us all and some found themselves in the Crowne Plaza down the road. Crown Chapter Awards were presented at dinner that evening and our chapter was of course recognized! Friday morning began the first business meeting. The president of Longwood College spoke before the assembly of hundreds of Zetas and a check for $9000 was presented as a gift to the college's scholarship fund in honor of the nine founders. Friday evening Honor Rings were presented to alumnae. Saturday was spent touring Longwood College and the grave site of founder, Frances Yancey Smith. Highlights of the tour included the 4-sided clock given to the college by the Farmville Four, the bathroom where the original founders met in secrecy, the mace presented to the college by Zeta Tau Alpha, a plaque in the main building commemorating the 9 founders, Alpha chapter room, Frances Yancey Smith's church and grave stone, and Maud Jones Horner's church. Saturday evening was spent in Province parties. Sunday morning began the traditional Special Initiation followed by Memorial Service and then Brunch. There was then an all-convention panoramic photo taken. That evening everyone donned their college jerseys for dinner and later we all enjoyed the century of songs and skits presented by the Convention Choir and our own North Carolina Zetas. Monday we conducted the bulk of business for the convention. It was approved by the legislative body to begin a feasibility study for a retirement home for elderly Zetas. Lynda Johnson Robb was recognized as the Outstanding Alumna for 1998. National Council for 1998-2000 was elected. Dinner was concluded with the presentation of silver awards. Both Iota Phi and Theta Tau chapters brought home silver awards. |
